The tough get going

Life is tougher is some other schools in Hong Kong, under the shadow of the defective education reform. Mr Kan's experience is only the tip of the iceberg. Some other depressed teachers even have no time, nor any outlets to channel their grievances.

The practical suggestions for Mr Kan are :

1. If your own conviction in education is strong enough, then keep equipping yourself with all relevant courses in teaching training and subject knowledge, regardless of whoever (evils - colleagues or students) you encounter at work. Be reflective on teaching and handling students' behaviour. It takes time to see how your sincerety changes those around you, even just one or two.

2. The workplace of a particular school can be totally different in another. It tells that we should not be discouraged or confined by the situation of where we are. The whole world is not as small as the place you are working in. Once you change to a school with better colleagial relationship, better students or school support, you can see the great differences. But to get the chance of working in an ideal workplace depends on one's luck and effort of upgrading professional qualifications. For those dedicated teachers who can still survive in the education reform, the following saying may be the maxim to be recited every day -

When the going gets tough, the tough (people) get going.
